In this study you answer by selecting and dragging with a mouse or a trackpad. That is not possible on a phone or tablet, so this device cannot be used.
Please return this study. If you would like to take part, open it again on a desktop or laptop computer.
In this study, you will use a trackpad or a mouse to provide responses.
Which of the following do you have for completing this study?
Please read the consent information below before continuing. Your participation in this study is voluntary, and you may withdraw at any time without penalty.
To ensure data quality, it is important that your responses reflect your own judgment. The use of AI tools (such as ChatGPT) to generate or assist with your responses is not permitted, and this study uses automated methods to help detect such use.
In this study, you will read about 3 different people, each described by a single trait. For each person, you will rate the extent to which you think they also have around 30 other traits, one at a time.
The task involves around 90 short ratings in total and should take about 12–18 minutes. You'll get a short break between people.
You answer by dragging the mouse or trackpad pointer out to a point on a circular scale. The next two pages explain how, and there are 5 practice trials before the study starts.
On each trial you will read: "The person has the trait: [Trait 1]. To what extent do you think the person is also [Trait 2]." You answer on a scale from 0 to 100.
0 — not at all. (Knowing they have Trait 1 does not at all make me think they have Trait 2.)
100 — definitely. (Knowing they have Trait 1 makes it practically certain that they have Trait 2.)
Use the middle of the scale when it is suggested somewhat.
For example, learning that someone is greedy might strongly suggest they are also selfish, so that would be a high number. It provides no evidence that they are left-handed, so that would be 0. Similarly, it provides no evidence that they are generous (in fact, it suggests the opposite), so that would also be 0.
You will enter your responses using a mouse or a trackpad, in one continuous movement without releasing the mouse/trackpad selection:
You will start five practice trials next.
Note #1: Make up your mind before you move. The trait word appears in the question shortly after you select the knob, and you can take as long as you need to think about your answer while holding the knob — moving your mouse/trackpad or letting go while thinking will invalidate the trial.
Note #2: Your response is recorded as soon as your mouse/trackpad pointer touches the circular scale — you will not be able to change your answer. So please make up your mind before you move.
You have completed all five practice trials. You will start the experiment next. Please remember to read the question and decide your response before moving your mouse/trackpad pointer.
In the experiment, you will rate 3 people, each on 30 trials.
The person has the trait: .
Take a moment to form an impression of this person — think about what they may be like in general. You'll then rate them on a series of traits, one at a time.
You've finished rating this person. Take as long as you need — when you're ready, continue to the next person.
You have finished the rating task. Here is a final brief survey on your demographic information.
1. Please indicate your age.
2. Please indicate your gender.
3. What is the highest level of education you have completed?
4. Please indicate your race.
5. Please indicate your ethnicity.
6. Do you have any feedback about this study? (optional)
You have completed all trials. Thank you for your participation.
